Matters arising

A brief discussion was made about the OOH statement and how this is all likely to change when GPs are allowed to opt out of 24 hour care-will have to wait til nearer the time to decide on how OOH training will be run.

Reporting in: All present reported in about current registrars and how things are going.

Gary Fraser then raised the following issues:

  1. Malcolm Thomas is leaving the scheme to become full-time at the postgraduate institute. A new scheme director is needed for 5 seesions-anyone interested?
  2. Registrar teaching will be on Wednesday mornings now instead of full day every other week.
  3. Psychotherapists have been involved in registrar groups on Wednesdays and have been well received. It has created interesting insights into some of the problems. It was suggested that we have someone come along to a NNTG session for this and everyone decided to give it a go using case discussion of problems cases.
  4. Modernising medical careers - from Aug 05-newly qualified doctors will have 2 pre-reg years, called F1 and F2. They will spend 4/12 in general practice. From Aug 04, half of the Newcastle graduates will be a pilot and start coming into practices. They will be F2s i.e. second year graduates and so be able to sign scripts. There will be up to 2 F2s at a time as well as our registrars and they will attract a grant.
  5. Partial registration has been abolished for foreign doctors/refugees so they can now apply to the scheme.
  6. PPDPs for registrars is coming.

Peer appraisal

This was using the T2D2 and has been done by Graham/Caroline and Stephen/Karen-not as time consuming as first though and felt to be worthwhile. It was decided that 2-3 learning points should be found from the appraisals when we feed back to the NNTG.

Feedback/Tutorial recording

We are all doing something slightly different but it was felt that this was fine as long as the recording was happening.

There is a diary programme on the computer through Google to help appraisals of the GPR.

Future topics

May event

Suggestions of Balint Groups including Problem Cases and burnout, Problem based learning with Trish Greenhaugh or Roger Neighbour.

Further NNTG meetings were to be every 2 months and would alternate with the first Thursday evening and the second Thursday afternoon.

Next meeting 15/1/04

P.S-I've recently had my re-accreditation meeting with Paul Creighton and as part of it he is hoping to ask our NNTG to look at standardising library/reference facilities for training practices-any thoughts!

Also if you are aware that any others in the group haven't received this e-mail can you let me know as my address book seems to have disappeared.

Future meetings
