Embleton Hall 1998

Attendance at Embleton Hall is confirmed as: Please contact Brad if any alterations. The session will be focussed around appraisal. There is no pre-course work but the group members are asked to come with some "appraisal problems". This subject of appraisal will relate well to our current discussion about supervisor trainers and the development of a trainee problem resource.

The draft programme is:

Thursday 7th May (starting at 2pm)
   Afternoon individual objectives
                        purpose of appraisal
                        why do appraisal systems fail
                        latest thinking on appraisal

   Evening unstructured discussion?

   Friday 8th May
   Morning appraisal skills
                        practical (confidence building) sessions
Afternoon appraisal system design and tailoring to
                        individual/practice needs

Training problems

The issues related to the dynamics of the current Phase III group seem to be resolved.

The idea of developing a "common training problems" resource was expanded further. The afternoon meeting on Thursday 18th June to discuss this further was confirmed: 1-5pm at Wooler (venue to be confirmed). Chris Marr will arrange PGEA. We plan to form a resource package of scenarios coupled with points to consider. Group members should bring a top ten list of training problems and resource some literature prior to the meeting. Appraisal of trainees' attitudinal problems will be explored at Embleton Hall. There are four areas to consider:

Out in Practice sessions Feb-Jul 1998

The next session is the Physiotherapy course at Berwick on 20/5/98. The consultation skills course was very successful, and of particular interest was the telephone triage scenarios.

Problem-solving exercises

It was felt by some that perhaps the OSCE was not particularly suitable for this sort of teaching/formative assessment. The only examples seem to be in past MRCGP exam papers. There are two objectives: The key is forming good clinical questions, and Mike Dodd presented a paper about this. There is opportunity to develop a tool for treaching EBM.

Report from the course organisers

Mike Dodd reported a need for group leaders for the half day release. We are likely to find that more GP Registrars in the future will wish part-time training and some reservations were expressed about the reduced educational value for the registrar. It is likely that all training places will be filled by the Scheme for August 1998.

Supervisor trainers

Is this appointment intended to have a teaching or a support role? The geography of Northumberland may limit the choice of appropriate supervisor trainers. The new trainer is likely to be most anxious about curriculum, assessment and tutorials.
