North Northumberland Trainers Group Afternoon trainers meeting held on 18/6/98 at the Tankerville Arms, Wooler.

The purpose of this meeting was to develop the North Northumberland GP Registrar Appraisal System and a logical approach to tackling common problems which occur during training. It was agreed that we should present our developments to George Taylor at Embleton Hall next month.

Attachments from this and future meetings will be sent in word6 and text format. Word97 is recommended as a word processor.

North Northumberland GP Registrar Appraisal System

• One of the first tutorials should be "what is a good doctor?" Start with happiness. Agree a framework for this and the areas to be appraised, which should fit with the headings of the appraisal tool.
• If a problem develops, address with the GP registrar in the light of the appraisal tool: "what sort of problem is it?" Address the problem not the person.

Dealing with common training problems

Knowledge and skills problems are relatively easy to deal with: attitudinal problems are particularly difficult to address if not recognised by the trainee as a problem.
