The session will be focussed around appraisal. There is no pre-course work but the group members are asked to come with some "appraisal problems". This subject of appraisal will relate well to our current discussion about supervisor trainers and the development of a trainee problem resource.

The draft programme is:

   Thursday 7th May (starting at 2pm)

                        latest thinking on appraisal

                        individual/practice needs

Training problems

There may be issues related to the dynamics of the current Phase III group. Chris will discuss with the the appropriate course organiser.

Chris Marr presented the idea of developing a "common training problems" resource. It was agreed to hold an afternoon meeting on Thursday 18th June to discuss this further. This could form a resource package of scenarios coupled with points to consider. We need to develop a top ten list of training problems and resource some literature prior to the meeting. Appraisal of trainees' attitudinal problems could be explored at Embleton Hall.

This meeting used to be called the Trainers Conference.

Falling attendance at trainer group meetings
It appears that this trainer group is one of the most active in the region, and attendance at the trainer group meetings was deemed very important by the group, both for support and educational development. There had been some discussion at the confenece about afternoon meetings and the group felt that this would be a useful way of tackling larger issues such as the common training problem resource.
The Supervisor Trainer
Newly appointed trainers such as Gary Fraser will be attached to a Supervisor Trainer for a period of 6 months, although it is hoped that a mentoring relationship will develop. This would be remunerated at Ł500. It was felt that the principle was good, and the topic spawned a discussion about appraisal within the trainer group itself: this could be explored at Embleton Hall in May.
NETTS
This was presented as an effective means of evaluating a training session. It was decided compare Dave Gill's tutorial assesment tool with the NETTS tool at a future meeting.
Personal Education Plans
Business plans produce training needs produce educational plans. PGEA will soon be applied to practice-based education in this region. Personal education plans fit in with our group vision in the develpment of the tripartite sessions. Brad will write to Paul Crighton highlighting our interest.

Out in Practice sessions Feb-Jul 1998

The feedback from the OSCE was discussed - a bit flat at the end, and perhaps better not to share "marks" in future. Overall very constructive and useful. The OSCE is probably more suitable to phase I registrars, and we should consider the development of a problem-solving exercise at the next meeting. We are awaiting some examples from Mike Dodd. There are two objectives:

Learning to teach problem solving
Learning how to problem-solve

The physiotherapy course is in the final stages of development.

Trainee log
Dave Gill has forwarded his improved log to Roger James for comment, but not yet had a response. The log has been upgraded and being piloted at Belford over the current 6 months. The plan is then to use this within the triane group for refinement.
Consultation teaching
Advanced course under development.
House officer teaching
Mike Guy recently held a successful 6-monthly sessions for new HO's. 17 attended (15 female) and 7 intend to apply to the NVTS scheme. Consultants at Wansbeck generally present a poor image of General Practice: it is difficult to address this directly. There may well be a marked improvement in applications following the successful undergraduate placements.

Everyone except Caroline Webster now has email contact. The development of a training CD-ROM was discussed.
