The doctor is not a very good listener, tends to confine questions to one area of concern and does not clarify the reasons for the patient's visit. The doctor is skilful in acquiring information which relates to the patient. The doctor demonstrates interest by his/her manner and willingness to listen without interrupting unnecessarily.

(a) Shows interest and is attentive.

 

(b) Is willing to take time to listen and does not interrupt unnecessarily.

 

(c) Allows patient to express own ideas (especially about the nature of the illness).

 

(d) Widens the discussion to make space for the patient's other concerns.

Notes for raters 

This area of behaviour can he assessed only when the rater has spent some time either directly observing consultations or by the use of audiotape or videotape recordings.
