PCG protocol for MRI referrals for The Newcastle Nuffield MRI Centre

All requests will be directed to the Newcastle Nuffield MRI Centre, Newcastle Nuffield Hospital, Clayton Road. Newcastle upon Tyne. Telephone number 0191 281 6411, fax 0191 281 5871

It is anticipated that referrals will be for lumbar spine, brain and knee MRI scans.

Appropriate clinical criteria for referral

Lumbar Spine

Severe lower back pain of more than six weeks duration plus

• Neurological symptoms and sensory loss 
• Decreased SLR 
• Sciatica

Brain

• First episode of fits 
• Exclude SOL 
• Urgent neurological opinion 
• Exclude MS

Knee

• Suspected anterior cruciate ligament tear
• Suspected internal derangement of the knee ? bone bruising 
• Instability of the knee joint 
• Suspected meniscal tear

Reports will be undertaken by the Newcastle Nuffield team of MRI Radiologists, and will include a suggested route for further patient management.

All films and the report will be forwarded to the referring clinician.
