Tetanus
vaccination
|
Tetanus and low dose diphtheria vaccine (Td) is used for routine
vaccination.
- Primary immunisation of adults and adolescents previously
unimmunised against tetanus
- Where booster doses are indicated, following a tetanus prone wound
or for travel.
A total of 5 doses are considered to give lifelong immunity eg

leaving.
Further boosters are only indicated
- following a tetanus prone wound where 5 doses have not been given
or immunisation status is unknown (immunoglobulin may also be
required)
- for travellers where medical help may not be available and the
last dose was more than 10 years previously.
Contraindications
- Acute febrile illness (except in presence of tetanus prone wound)
- Anaphylactic reaction to previous dose
