  • Neonatal skin sepsis , septic spots, etc:
    Always treat with systemic anti-staphylococcal antibiotic eg: Flucloxacillin 62.5mg/5ml qds.
  • Napkin thrush
    Characteristically red patches with discrete satellite lesions.
    • Check for oral thrush too.
    • Keep area as dry as possible.
    • Rx with clotrimazole 1% cream, used thinly bd: At other times use usual barrier cream.
  • Ammoniacal dermatitis
    Responds to general hygiene measures, any barrier cream, and keeping the area dry.
  • Eczema
    Common in infants.
    • If mild: Use baby oil and grease eg: Vaseline (most babies).
    • If moderate: Use 1% hydrocortisone cream (0.5% ONLY on face) and an emollient eg: aqueous cream.
    • If severe: Use emollient and oil in bath eg: balneum, and consider more potent topical steroids. Consider superadded staphylococcal infection.
