By 2-2y 6months the child :
- has at least 50 words and uses 2-word phrases
- may say the same phrase repeatedly
- has stopped using jargon
- can understand 2-keywords in a sentence
- identifies an object from the description of its use
- can relate articles to each other- "put the man in the car"
- often asks "what..", "where…"
- enjoys stories and rhymes, and can tell when mistakes are made
- uses "me" or "I" when talking about self
By age 3 years, the child is:
- able to use 3-4 word phrases
- reducing use of stereotyped phrases e.g. "what's that"
- able to follow 3-keyword instructions
- sometimes dysfluent in fast speech
- using f and s correctly
- using the past tense, though grammar may be incorrect
- understanding difference, e.g. big/small
- able to concentrate on stories and retell them
- mostly intelligible to strangers
- not usually able to look and listen at the same time
If the child is not progressing in this way, seek advice from the Consultant Community Paediatrician, and/or S<, then refer to the Freeman for audiological assessment if there are concerns about possible hearing loss.
