Indications for early referral of neonates for screening of hearing
Should be referred to Mr Meikle at the Freeman Hospital before 6 weeks of age where possible. Children with Downs syndrome should be referred to the Children's Hearing Clinic at Freeman Hospital for testing at the age of 10 months .
- Significant congenital deafness in a first degree relative.
- Serious anomalies of the external auditory meatus.
- Intrauterine viral infections.
- Severe hyperbilirubinaemia (Max SBR in micromol/l >= gestational age x10).
- Exchange transfusion.
- Persistent foetal circulation.
- meningitis.
- Hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy.
- Clear neurological abnormality.
