Features of Autism
- Difficulty with social relationships
- Difficulty with verbal communication
- Difficulty with non-verbal communication
- Difficulty in the development of play and imagination
- Resistance to change in routine
This may present as
- Displaying indifference
- Indicating needs by using an adult hand
- Copying words like a parrot (echolalic)
- Inappropriate giggling or laughing
- Lack of eye contact
- Variety is not the spice of life
- Lack of creative pretend play
- Can do some things very well and very quickly, but not tasks involving social understanding
- Handling or spinning of objects
- Bizarre behaviour
- Talking incessantly about only one topic
- One-sided interactions
- Does not play with other children
- Joins in only if an adult insists and insists
