In November 2000 NICE issued a Technology Appraisal Guidance regarding zanamivir
which recommended the use of the drug, in those “at risk” adults who present
within 36 hours of the onset of influenza like illness (ILI) and who are able to
commence treatment within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. The guidance was to
become active when influenza is known to be circulating in the community, as
indicated by community based virological and general practice activity
surveillance schemes (this will be confirmed by the DoH).

disease (COPD) and asthma, requiring regular medication
