Diabetes mellitus Retinal Screening in North Tyneside

All people with diabetes in North Tyneside who are registered should be having annual eye screening.

Routine Screening

• Involves the patient getting a reminder letter with forms to take to the local Optometrist.
• Data is returned to the Diabetes Resource Centre for entry onto the PROTOS database.

Referral to Ophthalmologist

Retinopathy / Maculopathy / Cataract requiring specialist review is referred to Mr Stannard at the RVI. Continued follow up / treatment in that service entails the patient being suspended from routine eye screening.

Local Optometrists have undergone specialist training in screening for diabetic retinopathy.
