Aspect of the History Examples 
Presenting problem
  • Exact nature of the problem 
  • Quality of the erection 
  • Quality of erections obtained with masturbation and erotica. 
  • Quality of nocturnal and early morning erections
Other sexual difficulties
  • This might apply to both partners
Time course of the erectile difficulties
  • Onset of the problem 
  • Time course of the problem - is it intermittent?
Sexual behaviour and attitudes
  • What is the level of interest in sex? 
  • Duration and satisfaction of foreplay 
  • Frequency, duration and satisfaction of intercourse. 
  • Are there recognised (or unrecognised) sexual preferences? 
  • Degree of physical and sexual attraction to partner.
Level of sex education
  • What is the level of education in relation to sex? 
  • Are there unrealistic expectations of sex?
General relationship
  • Quality of the relationship 
  • Commitment to the relationship 
  • Communication within the relationship
Personal and family history
  • Assessment of upbringing and family attitude to sex. 
  • Previous sexual relationships. 
  • What sort of lifestyle do the couple have? 
  • Do they have any particular worries (e.g. money, employment) 
  • Have there been any 'major life events' such as deaths within the family etc.?
Past medical history
  • Organic risk factors
Psychiatric history
  • Psychiatric risk factors
Drug history
  • Including alcohol, tobacco and recreational drugs

 If psychosexual aspects are strongly contributing to problems - consider referral to Clinical Psychologist for assessment.
