The Role of the dietician in diabetes care
|
Food and lifestyle choices are fundamental to diabetes care. An integrated
dietetic assessment should be core to the work of any diabetes team and central
to any patient management plan. in particular, some patients may require
additional or targeted dietetic intervention. Consider dietetic input or
discussion with dietician for the following categories of patient:
- New patients and new patient follow up (including patients who are newly
registered with the practice).
- Annual Review.
- Dyslipidemia - as part of a lifestyle assessment.
- Obesity:
- When it affects glycaemic control
- When weight trend is upward
- If "Orlistat" to be considered
- Type2 Pre commencement / change in oral agents Pre-insulin lifestyle
assessment
- Type I - where food and insulin not matched therefore hypo/hyperglycaemia
- Pregnancy / pre-pregnancy - in conjunction with diabetes pregnancy team.
- Undernourished diabetic patients requiring nutritional support (e.g. post
surgical, cancer)
- Renal disease - (may be seeing specialist renal dietician)
- Miscellaneous - coeliac disease, anaemia
Patient intervention times
Guidelines only certain individuals may require more time.
- New patients: 30 - 40 minutes
- Annual Review / Review: 15 - 20 minutes
