The BHS guidelines 2004 have been superceded by the NICE
hypertension guidelines 2006 and then the
NICE guidance on management
of hypertension in adults in primary care (2011)

Allow 4-6 weeks for a therapeutic trial of each drug (longer for ACEI and ARB).

If response to treatment is inadequate (<5mm diastolic) check compliance.

Avoid NSAID, effervescent analgesics, Gaviscon and pseudoephedrine - can all raise BP by 5mm Hg.
