Why am I taking it?
Hydroxychloroquine belongs to the second family of drugs used to treat arthritis and inflammatory disease. It works by damping down inflammation. It has no direct pain relieving effects, so you will have to continue your other arthritis tablets for some time.
What does it look like?
Orange/black tablets
How and when is it taken?
Usually you start by taking 2 tablets a day (400 mg) and this is reduced to one tablet a day (200 mg) after 2 to 4 months.
It is recommended that you do not take antacids for indigestion for at least 4 hours before or after taking Hydroxychloroquine Sulphate.
What happens if I forget to take it?
If you forget to take the tablets on any particular day do not take double the dose the next day.
Can I take alcohol and other medicines with the new treatment?
It is sensible to keep alcohol intake in moderation.
How long will it take to work?
Hydroxychloroquine can sometimes take at least 3 months before we see much change in the arthritis.
Should I take other drugs for arthritis?
You should continue with your other arthritis tablets as recommended whilst you are taking Hydroxychloroquine.
How long will I have to stay on the treatment?
As long as it continues to help without side effects.
Are there any side effects and what are they?
Some people may fee sick or notice a change in appetite taking
Hydroxychloroquine. These symptoms usually improve quickly.
When it was first used Hydroxychloroquine did affect vision in some people
(because of this we will arrange regular checks of your vision in the clinic).
This is rare with the low doses that we use now. Some patients notice blurring
of vision in the early stages of treatment. This improves quickly.
Rarely, some people notice loss of colour of the skin or hair.
It is recommended not to take Hydroxychloroquine during pregnancy or if you are
trying to conceive as this may have an effect on the foetus.
Important points to remember
- It is sensible to have checks of your vision at regular intervals when you attend the clinic.
- Always take your treatment as instructed and do not let your supply run out.
- This treatment is specially for you – please do not give it to anyone else with similar symptoms.
