Some common tablets
Captopril, Enalapril, Ramipril, Lisinopril
Why are they used?
ACE-Inhibitors reduce high blood pressure. Ineffective pumping causes fluid to collect in the lungs and breathlessness. They also improve the heart's pumping ability by reducing the strain on the heart and improving breathlessness.
How do they work?
They enlarge the blood vessels, which lowers your blood pressure. As a result, the heart does not have to pump as hard and is more efficient.
What to look out for
- You may feel dizzy for a short time after taking the tablet, because of a lowered blood pressure. This usually resolves after a few days, but if it is a persistent problem, please consult your GP. (The dose may need adjusting.)
- In a small number of people, they may cause a dry cough which usually resolves after about 3 months.
Special instructions:
Sometimes the function of the kidneys may be affected. A routine blood test will be done to check for this.
