What is it?
This is the condition that causes cyclical symptoms 1-2 weeks before a period and then improves with the period.
Who does it affect?
Up to 80% of women in their childbearing years - most usually over 35's.
What are the symptoms?
These are variable, and include both physical and mental complaints. The commonest are abdominal bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, increased appetite, irritability, mood swings, depression and drowsiness.
What causes it?
There have been many studies and different theories, but no one cause has been found.
What can I do to help myself?
- Changing the type of foods that are eaten to a high fibre (fresh fruit and vegetables, brown bread, baked potatoes etc) and low fat (grilled food, low fat spreads, semi-skimmed or skimmed milk etc).
- Reducing the amount of caffeine taken, eg. less tea and coffee.
- Keep a symptoms diary to help your doctor and yourself to spot a pattern to your symptoms.
Does medication help?
Different types of medication can help some people - they can also make the symptoms worse! Ask your doctor for further advice, but both vitamin B6 and/or evening primrose oil are both effective treatment which can be obtained from the Chemist.
