How can I help prevent an attack?
- Whenever an attack begins do not try to ignore it. Dealing with cystitis early gives you a greater change of clearing it up.
- Always drink plenty of fluids like water, milk or weak tea.
- Go to the toilet as often as you need to - do not try to "hold on".
- Always remember to wipe your bottom from front to back as this helps to stop bacteria spreading from the anus.
- Keep the vaginal area clean. Try washing twice a day with plain water or a mild, unperfumed soap. It's better not to use a flannel, but if you must, keep a separate one.
- If you find cystitis flares up after sex, it's a good idea for you and your partner to wash your genital areas both before and after.
- Avoid using antiseptics, perfumed soaps or talc in the vaginal area.
- Try to avoid tight fitting trousers or underwear and where possible choose cotton underwear with stockings rather than tights.
- If you feel another attack of cystitis coming on, drink at least half a pint of water which will help flush out any harmful bacteria in the bladder. You may also find that a hot water bottle helps.
