The human body was designed to be physically active but today's modern lifestyle means 80% of the population are not doing enough to benefit their health. If every one adopted physical activity in this country there would be:
- a 33% reduction in coronary heart disease
- a 25% reduction in strokes
- a 25% reduction in non-insulin dependent diabetes in the over 45's
- over a 5% reduction in hip fracture in the over 45's
The following health benefits are also associated with regular physical activity:
- Lowering of high blood pressure: Regular aerobic exercise has been shown to lower systolic and diastolic pressure by 10 mmHg in mild hypertensive men and women
- Greater weight loss than dieting alone: Combining regular physical activity and dieting has been shown to be more effective in managing mild to moderate obesity. Exercise can also reduce the risk of other diseases associated with obesity, eg. Heart disease, stroke, hypertension, joint problems.
- Lower incidence of non-insulin dependent diabetes.
- Better management of insulin dependent diabetes.
- Higher bone mass density and fewer osteoporotic fractures: Evidence shows that weight bearing exercise like walking helps to maintain bone mass. It is also shown to be important in the management of osteoporosis.
- Improved strength and flexibility in older people.
- Reduction in mild anxiety and depression: Physical activity can be effectively used as a way of reducing stress and aiding relaxation, evidence also shows that it can aid in reducing levels of mild to moderate depression.
- Improved self-esteem and confidence.
- Lowering of other heart disease risk factors: Evidence shows exercise improves levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol.
How much physical activity?
Individuals need to accumulate 30 minutes of moderate, comfortable activity at least 5 days a week. The 30-minute time period may be continuous or divided into sessions over the day, for example 2 x 15 minutes. Moderate intensity means that you exercise at a level which makes you:
- breathe faster
- feel warmer
- slightly increase the heart rate
- still able to talk
