This dermatitis of the canal can often be prevented by following some simple rules.

  1. Keep ears dry
Use plugs of cotton wool well coated in Vaseline petroleum jelly before showering. Use similar plugs with a cap, when swimming, and keep head out of water [i.e. no diving]. Wash hair in a basin, not in a bath or shower.
  2. Avoid the use of cotton buds
These are unsterile, interfere with the normal self-cleansing of the healthy ear canal and can irritate skin if used to 'scratch' canal. All other sharp objects should also be kept well away from ears: nothing smaller than your elbow should be put in your ear!
  3. Use bland drops to control itch
The ear canal skin may in fact be allergic to certain ear drops. Try to use simple drops, if at all possible, e.g.
    • 50% household vinegar in boiled water
    • Betnesol [steroid]
    • Locorten-Vioform [steroid antiseptic]
    • Olive and almond oil [good for dry, flaky dermatitis]
  4. Keep scalp free from dandruff
This may require the use of a medicated shampoo, but sometimes a flaky scalp can result from over washing and inadequate rinsing. Try to wash hair no more than once every 5 or 6 days, to prevent lifting of the natural oils.
