- What are your reasons for wanting to change your lifestyle? It may help to write these down and stick them up on the kitchen wall!
- Do you have a friend or partner who could support and encourage you?
- Can you think of ways to increase your exercise? e.g. taking the stairs instead of the lift, going for walks. Is there a local exercise class?
- Try not to put yourself on a diet. Instead aim to eat three meals a day, including plenty of fruit, vegetables and starchy foods (e.g. bread, potatoes, pasta). This need not be expensive e.g. use local markets and supermarket own brands.
- It is helpful to lay the table and sit down to eat. Don't eat while watching television.
- Have realistic aims such as maintaining the weight you're at. If you want to lose weight, this is best done slowly. Weighing yourself very often isn't a good idea; once a month is fine. The changes you make to your lifestyle need to be ones you can follow long-term.
- Don't ban foods. Eating should be enjoyable! Aim to include your favourite foods in moderation. Occasional alcoholic drinks can be included, as can eating out and entertaining.
- Try not to shop when you're hungry! It's also a good idea not to buy foods you're trying to cut down on in bulk. Tiy planning your meals in advance. Only prepare the quantity you need.
- Try to find something else to do or someone to talk to if you tend to cat when you are tired, angry, upset or tense. Reward yourself for the changes you make, you deserve it!
- Remember, the most important thing is to be happy with yourself.
