Online access to Healthcare Databases
The Regional Library Advisory Service (RLAS) has co-ordinated a library
project that supplies a range of databases to all NHS health care professionals
within the Northern & Yorkshire Region. The project is for a trail period of
one year and started on August 7th 2000. The databases can be accessed via any
computer linked to the Internet.
Although Librarians are widely publicising this service, I am also informing
you directly, so that you can inform other staff you feel may be interested.
The main databases supplied are:-
- Medline (1966-present) - the leading medical database which also provides
abstracts of the articles.
- CINAHL (1983-present) - provides authoritative coverage of the
literature related to nursing and allied health. Abstracts are included.
- AMED - abstracts of journal articles, covering subjects of complementary
medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation, podiatry and
palliative care.
- EMBASE Psychiatry - a database with abstracts, covering all aspects of
psychology, psychiatry, and addiction disorders.
- Cochrane Library - includes the full text of the regularly updated
systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare prepared by The Cochrane
Collaboration. It is an essential database for those searching for
information on evidence-based healthcare.
- Best Evidence - commentaries of articles that are methodologically sound
and clinically relevant.
- DARE - Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness is a full text
database containing critical assessments of systematic reviews from a
variety of medical journals.
You can access these databases through the Internet and NHSnet at the
