When your child is 3 years 1 month old you will receive a card inviting your child to attend for an eye test at your local Child Health Clinic. The Orthoptist will be looking for a squint (an eye that turns) and possible eyesight problems. Treatment of these conditions is much more effective if detected at an early age. The test will take approximately ten minutes and will involve your child looking at some toys and pictures and matching some shapes. Most children manage these tests very easily at this stage and because the emphasis is on play and having fun, they actually enjoy the test! It will be necessary to cover one eye at some stage so it may be a good idea to practice this at home before you come, using your hand. When parents get an appointment for their child it is very important that they attend. If problems are not picked up early this can affect how they do at school.
