Emergency contraception

If you have had sexual intercourse without using birth control, or think your method may have failed, eg, condom splitting or making a mistake with the contraceptive pill, there are two emergency methods you can use. Both are free. If you act quickly emergency contraception can usually prevent unplanned pregnancy.

The two methods of emergency contraception are:

  • The emergency pill
Two special doses of a pill which must be started within three days (72 hours) after unprotected sex. The sooner the better. It is usually very effective with a 96-99% success
  • The IUD
Fitting of an IUD (intra uterine device) is done by a doctor. It must be fitted early, within five days after unprotected sex. The sooner the better. It is very effective, with almost 100% success rate and can be used as an ongoing method of contraception if wished.

Emergency contraception can only be provided by a doctor, after a consultation with your practice nurses or after being seen at the family planning clinic. If you cannot get to see your GP or practice nurse, then a hospital Accident and Emergency Department may be able to help you.

BUT REMEMBER:- These treatments are for emergency use ONLY. If you continue to have sexual intercourse, you should use a regular and effective birth control method. See your general practitioner for advice.
