Practice professional development plan 2001

Aims of this Professional Development Plan

  1. To continue to develop an educational programme more tailored to the needs of the practice, the individual doctors, nurses and other staff groups working within it.
  2. To include within the programme all staff members, aiming to meet their individual and practice orientated needs as far as possible.
  3. To adopt a flexible approach which allows us to take advantage of development opportunities presented to the practice over time.

PCG & NHS priorities

The educational needs and development of the practice staff and doctors need to coincide with wider policy as laid down in the NHS White Paper "The New NHS", the requirements of the TACT PMS contract, the development of National Service Frameworks and PCG priorities. These are enumerated below:

  4. Mental health NSF
  5. Cancers
  6. Accidents

Practice aims

Mission statement

  1. Practice Clinical Meetings to take place on a monthly basis, each one lasting at least 60 minutes.
  2. Audit
    Audit will be performed regularly throughout the year. 
  3. Protocols
    The practice has a large number of protocols, which require to be regularly overviewed and discussed by the appropriate professionals involved.
  4. Clinical governance
    To improve the practice's functioning in this respect. particularly in audit (Dr BN Cheek).
  5. Formulary
    To optimise practice prescribing policy in line with the development of the PCG Prescribing Formulary (Dr B N Cheek).
  6. Integration
    To continue to develop and extend the role of the practice nurses, district nurses and health visitors and work towards an integrated nursing team.
  7. Computerisation
    The practice to move towards being paperless.

To assess the needs of the local population

 To assess the needs of the local population and respond appropriately with the development of the appropriate services based at Well Close Square Surgery.

To promote the philosophy of an "educational practice" 

To promote the philosophy of an "educational practice" with development of a well balanced team including all staff:

  1. Further development of team based working to encourage participation of all staff members in an integrated and inclusive way, extending to team working within the TACT PMS.
  2. Bimonthly Primary Health Care Team Meetings to discuss areas of importance and interest. All staff will have the opportunity to submit topics to the programme. Monthly clinical meeting (sttrategic).
  3. Regular staff educational meetings held bimonthly and lasting 60 minutes.
  4. GP Registrar training involving twice weekly tutorial (Dr B N Cheek) and weekly half day courses together with other courses.
  5. To continue to develop internal practice appraisal (Dr J M Watson/Mrs S Steele) 

To maintain practice income:

  1. Monitor both practice income and expenditure (Mrs S Steele)
  2. Identify potential new sources of practice income (Partners/Mrs S Steele) 3 Monthly practice business meetings (Partners/Mrs S Steele)

To keep abreast of local, national, medical and medico-political developments

To keep abreast of local, national, medical and medico-political developments and respond appropriately, ensuring the promotion of the overall practice aims:

  1. PCG involvement - (Dr RMS Wooding/Sister Jane Smithson/Jane Steven)
  2. PMS- (Dr BN Cheek)
  3. OMB - (Dr AC Bromly/Dr RMS Wooding) 
  4. LMC - (Dr BN Cheek) 
  5. GP Registrar Training - (Dr BN Cheek)
  6. Northumbria VTS - (Dr BN Cheek) 

Monitoring and Review:

  1.  Record to be kept of all educational activities within the practice (Mrs S Steele). However, each staff member being responsible for his or her own record keeping.
  2. Review of progress to take place every six months.
  3. Renewal of plan to take place annually.
